Arch503: Freeway Park Mixed Use
(University of Washington - M.arch)
This featured project was completed for while studying at the University of Washington during the Autumn quarter of 2011. Arch503 is the fourth design studio in the 2 year master of architecture program. The aim of the studio is to develop a better understanding of how to merge the various components of an actual project into a cohesive whole. We were required to resolve structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil considerations in conjunction with the programmatic requirements the client needed. I approached the project by dividing the structural system, MEP systems, and facade as discrete in relation to one another. This allowed the building to be more adaptable over time as both tenant and building needs change. Conceptually, the central core was thought of as an extension of the ground plane and thus inherited its monolithic and textured characteristics and served as the main vertical and horizontal circulation for the building. The programmable spaces to the East and West of the core are more transparent, a consideration that developed from the Freeway Park Association's need for openness and passive observation.
